Re: Dilated Show

So I attended the Dilated Show in hopes of finally listening to some new innovative beats and the ever-pleasing scratching of Mister Babu. I parked near Civic Center (big mistake) and had to endure the 'hollering' of pimps and hos as I caroused down the street towards my destination. Fortunate for me, I had my trusty side-kick by my side to ease the fear of becoming another one-dolla hooka for some grimy pimp in a cheap purple suit. After traveling 4 blocks in the wrong direction I remembered that the mezzanine was only 2 blocks from where I parked. Again, we traveled down pimp & ho blvd. until reaching our destination only to be stunned by the short 2 person line to get in. We did what any reasonable person would do at 11pm and headed to a bar around the corner to get inebriated. Once the intoxication level had risen we headed back to the show and once inside realized that the show had started without us. To alleviate the pain of missing some no-name opening acts we drank a few more stellas. We then caught the latter end of Aceyalone's attempt to be fresh, innovative and most importantly hyphey. Apparently someone has been telling him that its a good idea to sample radio songs and drop his rhymes on top. Someone should clue him on the fact that has been done over and over again to no avail in the hip hop scene. Its older than your grand-mamas undies on a bum who has not showered in over a month. Shortly after Alchemist came on stage did a quick 2 minute song and exited as fast as a broke ass crackhead running away from his baby mamas' (yes that's plural). I naively hoped that Dilated would compensate for that awkward performance. As soon as the lights dimmed even more and I could not make out the next guy from darkness, the poorly placed projector began playing the tired video that Babu has so regularly used. The only up-side was the live-feed of his hands becoming one with the mixer. Besides that their new songs were so-so and they hardly played any of the classics. Sometimes its better to stick with the old and out with the new. It was quite a disappointment to see some of the o.g. mcs and djs get sucked into the hype. BUT... all in all it was a good time simply because I had two free tickets and nothing better to do than sleep on a Thursday night. If you saw me there... I was the chick at the entrance thanking people for coming to my b-day party (hey you can't blame a girl for trying).

Dirty Hands - The Art and Crimes of David Choe

Dirty Hands: The Art & Crimes of David Choe

Documentary Competition
(USA, 2008, 92 mins)
DigiBeta
World Premiere
Directed By: Harry Kim
Writer: Harry Kim
Producers: Elizabeth Ai, Harry Kim
Cinematographers: Harry Kim, Johnny Granado
Editors: Daniel Freedman, Harry Kim, Heather Lenz
Featuring: David Choe

Los Angeles artist David Choe is not as crazy as his violent, phantasmagoric, and sexual work across several media would suggest, he is considerably more so, embodying William Blake's adage that “you never know what is enough unless you know what is more than enough.”Captivated by Choe's mania for adventure and excess, close friend Harry Kim filmed the artist's “life and crimes” from 2000 to 2007, a period coinciding with Choe's rise to fame and fortune in the art world as he matured from a street artist bombing underpasses and illustrating porn magazines to a respected muralist, painter, and graphic novelist. The ride, however, was a bumpy one. From jail sentences and an addiction to shoplifting and graffiti to dinosaur hunting and wrestling pygmies in the heart of the Congo, Choe's irrepressible spirit is as much a model of unrestrained living as it is a cautionary example of excess.

Graffiti Writer falls from a Freeway overpass

A man apparently spray painting graffiti on an overpass fell Saturday night onto the 5 Freeway in East Los Angeles, authorities said.
Several motorists told authorities that the man had possibly broken his back at about 9:45 p.m. and had a can of spray paint clutched in his hands as he lay on the freeway near the Main Street off-ramp, said California Highway Patrol spokesman David Porter. Porter said the man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was being treated.
Porter said the man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was being treated. His name was not released.
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Det. Sean Moreno said he had heard of taggers getting injured once every couple of months from falls or being "clipped by a car.""It really hasn't been too drastic compared to the past," Moreno said of recent activity. "Let's put it this way: Nothing's stood out like, 'I can't believe they did that.' It's pretty much the same."They figure how can they make their piece and how many people can see it -- how much public traffic goes through so their tag can be seen," he said of taggers.

An Absolute Shower -- Now Showing!

Carmichael Gallery Presents An Absolute ShowerThe Art of Will Barras
Opening Reception: Saturday June 7, 2008, 8PM – Midnight1257 N. La Brea AveWest Hollywood, CA 90038Exhibition Dates: June 7 – July 6, 2008

Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art is pleased to announce An Absolute Shower, a solo exhibition featuring the work of UK artist Will Barras. Barras will be showcasing more than 15 new original paintings and drawings in a wide assortment of media, including pen, pencil, acrylic, ink and spray paint on printed fabric, linen, canvas and paper. In An Absolute Shower, Barras explores a thunderstorm of themes, ranging from reflections on his homeland to fantasies of the exotic. For Barras, the name of the show captures the essence of what it means to be British. A famous catchphrase of the caddish English comedic actor Terry Thomas, it evokes the unique landscape, weather, and humor of the United Kingdom. At the same time, it is a name that lends itself well to Barras' inventive body of work and talent for narrative. "It's a good start for telling a story," he observes, and conjures up the thrills of "a difficult journey, or a secret history or legend".Freeing himself from the limitations of a specific theme, Barras prefers to craft a more impromptu sequence as he works, weaving a few concrete character images into provocative backdrops and mysterious circumstances. It is important to him to maintain the natural flow of energy in his pieces, ensuring that delicate balance between the abstract and the figurative. For Barras, this means "working in a freer, looser way, not so much in line quality, but ideas and association."Barras' confident experimentation results in impressive brush strokes that lend a sense of tremendous momentum, particularly when paired with his astonishingly vibrant color palette. "I often use muted colors at first and build it up with washes of paint; I kind of move from one color to another, moving through the palette like it's a journey." Sometimes the backdrop of a piece is dark and looming, with a sudden injection of bright tones in places "to make it pop." It is this heightened contrast that makes Barras' pieces explode from the confines of their canvas. Perhaps the artist describes it best himself, however, likening his work to "being strapped to the front of a passenger train which is on a collision course with another train."
(Umm.. the description is a bit out there.. but his work looks awesome...-Sandrita)

Berkeleyians

During finals students have to put up with studying all day and all night... Shitty studying habits... the occassional temptation from the jesus-juice ....a lack of anything decent to eat... and we also have to deal with hairy hippies running rampant through the computer labs while people are trying to understand physics. Well I guess we can understand the theory of gravity, visually.

Cowboy bandit leading the invasion.
This chick didn't want to get a sunburn so she decided to wear a hat. To makes matters worse this was one of the hottest days of the year. Lets just say that computer lab never smelled the same again....

Mr. Brainwash Solo Art Show

Mr. Brainwash, or MBW, is the moniker of an eccentric French filmmaker. MBW has spent the last nine years attempting to make the ultimate documentary about graffiti art. But whilst filming many of the world’s most renowned street artists at work, MBW began putting his camera aside and making art of his own. He has graduated from a few hand-drawn stickers to giant billboard sized paste-ups. MBW does not fit the stereotype of your average street vandal. His artistic process chiefly consists of throwing random modern cultural icons into a blender and turning it up to eleven. The results are by turns profound, provocative and inspirational. “Life is beautiful” is the first exhibition ever mounted by Mr. Brainwash. It takes place in a former Hollywood studio complex and will feature over 200 paintings, sculptures and prints alongside an installation made from 25,000 books and a life-size re-creation of Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks.” For more info go to http://www.artshow2008.com/

“Life Is Beautiful,” MBW solo show, Columbia Square, 6121 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood. www.artshow2008.com. Opening reception, with Shepard Fairey as DJ, Wed., June 18, 7-11 p.m. Exhibit Thurs.-Sat., June 19-21, 1-9 p.m. And Sun., June 22, 1-5 p.m.
